HAVANA, Cuba, April 22 (acn) More than 120 countries have confirmed attendance at the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Coordinating Committee, to take place in Havana from April 27 to 30.
The announcement was made by Abelardo Moreno, deputy minister of Foreign Relations and Cuban ambassador to the United Nations. He said this meeting is particularly important, “for two essential reasons: (1) this will be the last ministerial meeting under Cuba’s mandate, and (2) the final arrangements for the coming 15th NAM Summit to be held in Egypt from July 11 to 16 are to be made here,” Granma newspaper reported.
Moreno also said that more than 60 ministers, most of them foreign ministers, had confirmed attendance. He said that in the last few weeks, intense negotiation working sessions were held in New York for drawing up the 467 paragraphs that comprise the Final Declaration, which is to
be discussed at the meeting. But most important, the Cuban diplomat said, is that the working guidelines of NAM, the reaffirmation of its guiding principles and policy, were agreed to in New York.
In this regard, he described the document as “detailed and diverse.” It includes an assessment on the current international situation and deals with other issues like decolonization and self-determination processes, regional conflicts, human rights, migration, drug trafficking,
disarmament and natural resources.
Moreno pointed out that in the chapter devoted to Latin America and the Caribbean, NAM advocates, the necessity of putting an end to the US blockade on the island, and giving back the territory that the United States illegally occupies in Guantanamo.
It also explicitly offers support and solidarity to the government of Evo Morales, in Bolivia.
He mentioned too that this is the first NAM meeting after the Israeli attack against the Palestinian people in the Gaza strip, an event that should be addressed by this organization.
Moreno said the President of the UN General Assembly Miguel has been invited to this ministerial meeting because of the hard economic crisis facing the world today, and noted that NAM will try to adopt common positions towards this complex scenario.
Attending delegations will session in two groups: from April 27 to 28 for high level officials, and from April 29 to 30, at the ministerial level with two commissions, one on policies and one on society and economy.
When summarizing the role of Cuba as the NAM chair, Abelardo Moreno said, “We’ve achieved a healthy, strong movement, with a high level of coordination in the Group of 77; a movement in which agreeing on points of view and solidarity have become everyday practices.”
