Once at the site, the crowd of Cubans paying honors to the Independence heroes also marked the 19th anniversary of the Tribute Operation, an action that brought home the remains of the Cubans killed in action in other countries, particularly in Africa.

During the ceremony, Major Luz Aliocha Ochoa, Chief of the Young Communist League at the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, pointed out that those Cubans, who were killed while fighting for the independence of other nations, gave their lives inspired by the examples of Antonio Maceo and Panchito Gomez Toro.

Major Aliocha Ochoa stressed that for the Cuban youth, today’s main combat trenches are their support of the country’s recovery, food production, reforestation and their preparedness for the defense of the nation.

The Cuban youths will be alongside their heroes and martyrs in today’s the ideological struggle, as the Cuban Five have been doing since they were incarcerated, she said in direct reference to the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters held in US jails since 1998 for having fought terrorism against Cuba.
