HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 6 (acn) Cuban President Raul Castro and his Panamanian
counterpart Martin Torrijos Espino held official talks on Monday at the
Palace of the Revolution in Havana as part of the latter’s official
visit to the Caribbean nation.
According to Granma news daily, the meeting reaffirmed the healthy state
of relations between the peoples and governments of the two countries
and the desire to continue working to strengthen them in the future.
Raul and Torrijos discussed the economic, social and political tasks
ahead for both nations amid the complex international situation and the
consequences of climate change. Bilateral relations and multilateral and
regional issues were also on the agenda.
President Torrijos congratulated the Cuban people on the 50th
anniversary of the Revolution and thanked Cuba for its collaboration in
training Panamanian doctors and recalled that a group of them who
graduated from the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana are
already working in his country.
For his part, Raul praised the human qualities of the graduates and
their willingness to work in remote communities. He also expressed
Cuba’s gratitude to Panama for its solidarity and the assistance
received after three hurricanes hit the island last year.
The Cuban president also expressed interest in the project to expand the
Panama Canal and asked Torrijos about the characteristics of the boats
that will be able to cross the channel when the widening project
concludes and how that will affect the Panamanian economy.
