Cuba Denounces Human Trafficking at UN General Assembly

HAVANA, Cuba. Cuba denounced the illicit trafficking in persons this Thursday at the UN General Assembly, saying it stems from the existence of more than 1.4 billion people living in extreme poverty.

Ileana Nuñez, Cuban alternative representative to the United Nations, spoke at the debate in the General Assembly dedicated to adopt a collective action to stop human trafficking, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.

The Cuban diplomat said that this complex problem, associated with other crimes such as drug trafficking and money laundering, needs a collective solution.

Nuñez said that this illicit trade generates more than US$ 40 billion a year, between US$ 5 to 9 billion of net profits.

She pointed out that many people trying to escape underdevelopment and poverty by migrating illegally end up losing their money and many times enslaved by traffickers.

She added that international cooperation and mechanisms are needed to eradicate these problems.

Ileana Nuñez pointed out flaws in US immigration laws such as the so- called wet-foot/dry-foot law (Cuban Adjustment Act)that encourages Cubans to immigrate illegally to the US. She added that these are further encouraged by US TV and radio programs that promote illegal immigration and portray hijackers and murderers as heroes.
