Raul Castro Presides over Ceremony Marking 50th Anniversary of the Revolution

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jan 1 (acn) The central ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution is underway at the Céspedes Park, in this eastern city, and it is being presided over by Cuban President Raul Castro.

Some 3,000 Santiago citizens, representing the Cuban people, are attending the ceremony, in which Raul Castro is scheduled to give the key speech following the statements by representatives of several generations of Cubans.

The documentary film Ode to the Revolution, by Roberto Chile, was screened in the beginning of the ceremony, which takes part in front of the old City Hall of Santiago, where Fidel Castro proclaimed the revolutionary triumph in 1959. The event’s agenda also includes a gala with the performance of local artists.

President Raul Castro Pays Tribute to Cuba’s Martyrs

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jan 1 (acn) Cuban President Raul Castro today paid tribute to Cuba’s heroes and martyrs at the Santa Ifigenia cemetery in this eastern city as part of commemorations of the 50th Anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution.

Raul laid wreaths in the name of Fidel Castro and his own at the mausoleum that treasures the remains of Cuban National Hero Jose Marti, as well as at the pantheon of the martyrs of the 1953 attack on the Moncada military barracks and at the monument raised to Cuban internationalist soldiers killed in action.

Revolution Commander Juan Almeida Bosque and Army Corps General Ramon Espinosa Martin, Chief of the Western Army, also paid tribute to the Cuban martyrs.

Raul Castro watched the change of the guard of honor permanently staged by cadets of the Revolutionary Armed Forces at the tomb of Jose Marti.

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 1 (acn) Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro sent a congratulations message to the Cuban people on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution; the message was aired on Cuban radio and TV at 12 am, January 1st, 2009.

“A few hours from the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the Triumph, I congratulate our heroic people.”

Raul Castro to Address the Cuban People Today from Santiago de Cuba

Havana, Cuba, Jan 1 (acn) Cuban President Raul Castro will address the Cuban people during central commemorations today at 6:00 pm for the 50th anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution, which will take place at the historic Cespedes Park, in eastern Santiago de Cuba city.

Some 3 000 Santiago citizens, representing all Cubans, will gather in front of Santiago’s old City Hall to commemorate the victorious entrance of the Rebel Army in that city and the speech given by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, in which he proclaimed the definitive independence of the Cuban people.

The famous expression by Fidel, when he said: “At last we have reached Santiago!” will mark the beginning of the celebration, which will count on the performance of outstanding local artists, Granma daily reported.

Also scheduled during the rally is the screening of a documentary film on the history of the Cuban Revolution. The event will be aired on Cuban national and international radio and Television.

Cuban Leinier Domínguez among the World’s Chess Elite

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 30 (acn) Cuban Grand Master (GM) Leinier Dominguez remains among the world’s chess elite according to the ranking of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) that was updated on Tuesday.

Dominguez now places 23rd in the list with an ELO rating of 2717 points, which makes him the top player in Latin America and the second in the Americas – only behind American Gata Kamsky who places 17th with 2725 units.

The outstanding chess player, who was included in the list of the Top Ten Cuban sportspeople of 2008, won the World Chess Blitz Championship held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, last November and remained undefeated during the World Chess Olympiad held also in November in Dresden, Germany.

The FIDE world ranking is led by former world champion GM Vesselin Topalov of Bulgaria with an ELO rating of 2796 points and he is followed by reigning world champion GM Viswanathan Anad (2791) of India.

The Top Ten also includes Ukrainian GM Vassily Ivanchuk (2779), Russian GM Alexander Morozevich (2771), Azerbaijan’s GM Teimor Radjabov (2761), Russian GMs Dmitry Jakovenko (2760) and Vladimir Kramnik (2759), Hungarian GM Peter Leko (2751) and Slovakian Sergei Movsesian (2751).
