Cuban Solidarity Order Bestowed on Colombian Jurist

HAVANA, Cuba, April 10 (acn) The president of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Kenia Serrano, has conferred the Solidarity Order on Colombian lawyer Pedro Polo Barrios, a paradigmatic figure of the solidarity-with-Cuba international movement.

Throughout the last 50 years, every cause to be defended or boosted, linked to the Cuban Revolution, has counted on the decisive support and the commitment of his actions, said ICAP’s first vice-president Enrique Román during the solemn ceremony held on Thursday at Havana’s Friendship centre.

After recalling that in 1998 he received the Friendship Medal, also granted by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, he said that Polo Barrios has fought fierce crusades in favor of Cuba, in classrooms, trade unions and many other forums.

He also made reference to his active participation in the campaign for the release of the Cuban antiterrorism fighters Gerardo Hernández, Fernando González, Ramón Labañino, René González and Antonio Guerrero, unjustly incarcerated in the United States.

Polo Barrios reaffirmed his purpose of increasing solidarity work with Cuba in Colombia and above all,“the necessary struggle for the immediate release of Gerardo, Fernando, Ramón, René and Antonio”, he said.
He denounced the biased trial against The Five and pointed out that these men went to the United States to prevent terrorist actions against the Cuban people.

Cuban Five Case Denounced at Inter-parliamentarian Union

HAVANA, Cuba, April 10 (acn) Cuba denounced before the 120 Assembly of the Inter-parliamentarian Union (UIP) underway in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, the brutal injustice committed against the Five Cuban antiterrorism fighters incarcerated in the US since 1998.

While speaking at the forum, Cuban deputy Ramón Pez Ferro pointed out to the 500 participating parliamentarians that Ramón Labañino, Gerardo Hernández, René González, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando González were only monitoring the activities of Miami-based terrorist groups.

Pez Ferro, who is also the president of the Commission for International Relations of the National Assembly of the People’s Power (Parliament), also denounced the hypocrisy and falseness of the so-called capitalist “free press”, especially in the US, which continues to hide the reality of this case from their peoples.

As an example, he pointed out the petition presented to the US Supreme Court of Justice by The Five’s defense lawyers so their cause is re- xamined, supported by 12 Amicus Curiae (Friends of the Court) of organizations and personalities from around the world, which includes 10
Nobel Prize winners.

He highlighted that hundreds of parliamentarians, a large number of lawyer’s groups, non-governmental and human rights organizations have also sent in their support for this petition.

Although these actions –he affirmed- constitute an unprecedented historical event, it hasn’t called the attention of the western press.

At another moment of the assembly’s debates, deputy Yenielys Regüeiferos spoke about Cuba’s position with regard to the current global crisis, in terms of climate change, sustainable development, and renewable energy.

Deputy Regüeiferos was chosen by the UIP’s Latin American Group to thank the host country, on behalf of Latin America and the Caribbean, for the excellent attention received and to acknowledge the good organization of the meeting.

Cuba’s Medical Care for the Disabled Praised

HAVANA, Cuba, April 10. Cuba’s medical care for the disabled was praised on Thursday by Luis Fernando Astorga, Executive Director for Latin America at the Inter-American Institute on Disability and Inclusive Development.

Speaking to Radio Rebelde in Havana, the expert said that the disabled in Cuba enjoy a lot of respect and added that there is great commitment to them among the people and by the government.

In addition, he praised the work of all Cuban State organizations that design policies, strategies, programs and services to improve the quality of life of the disabled and facilitate their social integration.

According to the specialist, people with incapacities are often discriminated against in many countries of Latin America. “They are denied their basic human rights,” he noted.

Astorga stressed that many countries and societies have not been able to effectively advance in the struggle against the violations of these people’s human rights.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are nearly 650 million disabled people in the world today.
