HAVANA, Cuba, April 10 (acn) The president of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Kenia Serrano, has conferred the Solidarity Order on Colombian lawyer Pedro Polo Barrios, a paradigmatic figure of the solidarity-with-Cuba international movement.
Throughout the last 50 years, every cause to be defended or boosted, linked to the Cuban Revolution, has counted on the decisive support and the commitment of his actions, said ICAP’s first vice-president Enrique Román during the solemn ceremony held on Thursday at Havana’s Friendship centre.
After recalling that in 1998 he received the Friendship Medal, also granted by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, he said that Polo Barrios has fought fierce crusades in favor of Cuba, in classrooms, trade unions and many other forums.
He also made reference to his active participation in the campaign for the release of the Cuban antiterrorism fighters Gerardo Hernández, Fernando González, Ramón Labañino, René González and Antonio Guerrero, unjustly incarcerated in the United States.
Polo Barrios reaffirmed his purpose of increasing solidarity work with Cuba in Colombia and above all,“the necessary struggle for the immediate release of Gerardo, Fernando, Ramón, René and Antonio”, he said.
He denounced the biased trial against The Five and pointed out that these men went to the United States to prevent terrorist actions against the Cuban people.
