In the center of the country a Guillermo Fariñas is debated between the life and the death, for own will, and in spite of having a team of ten doctors of the highest professional qualification, and the most modern equipment at your disposal that prepares. It is only this way explained that has survived to more than l20 days of fast.

El don más preciado lo es también para Guillermo Fariñas

En Cuba, el don más preciado es la vida, y numerosas estadísticas médicas dan fe de ello, cuando se conoce que cada año fallecen menos de cinco niños por cada mil nacidos vivos, mientras apenas se registran muertes maternas.

Pero aún esos indicadores mínimos, inferiores a los de muchas naciones desarrolladas, entristecen a médicos y autoridades estatales, pues la aspiración es que se reduzcan al cero absoluto, aunque bien se sabe que al menos hoy, tal anhelo es imposible de alcanzar.
Y hay más: cada cubano al nacer tiene garantizado, desde ese instante y hasta el final de sus días, médicos y medicinas totalmente gratuitos, independientemente de la gravedad de sus padecimientos o de los recursos que sea necesario emplear.
A nadie se le pregunta al llegar a un consultorio u hospital cuál es el color de su piel, su oficio, su creencia religiosa o su filiación política, como tampoco se indaga si contribuye o no a la construcción de esa sociedad a que aspiramos todos los hijos dignos de esta tierra.
En el centro del país un Guillermo Fariñas se debate entre la vida y la muerte, por propia voluntad, y a pesar de tener a su disposición un equipo de diez médicos de la más elevada calificación profesional, y el equipamiento más moderno de que se dispone. Sólo así se explica que haya sobrevivido a más de l20 días de ayuno.
Esta persona, de acuerdo con declaraciones del jefe de los Servicios de Terapia Intensiva del hospital donde se atiende, está consciente y en pleno uso de sus facultades mentales; sin embargo, de nada han valido los intentos de ese especialista, con quien mantiene buenas relaciones, para hacer que colabore con la ciencia en el empeño de salvar su vida.
Están a su favor en ese combate recursos que en cualquier nación costarían más de mil 300 dólares diarios, sin contar los cientos de pruebas de laboratorio que se le han realizado, y los medicamentos que es necesario adquirir en el extranjero, según refieren los entendidos, pero se atiene a quien sabe qué razones, y se niega a vivir.
La favorable relación médico-paciente se ha extendido a la familia y las amistades, que no han mostrado queja alguna de la atención especializada.
¿Qué mueve a un hombre a tomar la penosa decisión, contraria a todo orden racional, de privarse de la vida? Si posee creencias religiosas ¿Qué lo hace erigirse en Dios para quitarse lo que se le otorgó como gracia suprema?
Incomprensible para este redactor, quien sólo pide al azar, a la naturaleza, a la ciencia clínica y al amor hacia sus semejantes de un equipo médico, que este desdichado trance de Guillermo Fariñas, extendido ya por más de 120 días de sufrimiento, tenga un final feliz.
