Bolivian President Declares US Diplomat Undesirable

HAVANA, Cuba, March 10 (acn) Bolivian President Evo Morales declared Monday “persona non grata” US diplomat Francisco Martinez, accusing him of conspiring with the opposition. Morales also accused the US embassy official of maintaining ties with the CIA.

Morales said the Mexican-born US official “was the permanent contact with opposition groups during the entire stage of the conspiracy,” in a direct allusion to the “civic-regional coup d’etat” that the opposition tried last year, said EFE according to a Granma report.

“He was the contact person at the US embassy with some former police officers working in the Special Operations Center (of the Bolivian Police),” said Morales in a speech at the government palace in La Paz.

Officials in Washington denied last month Morales’ initial accusations against Martinez, accredited as the second secretary of the US embassy.

US Ambassador to La Paz, Philip Goldberg, was also declared “persona non grata” in September 2008, for his activities against the Bolivian
government.
