Cuba Stresses Need for Int’l Cooperation to Face World Crisis

HAVANA, Cuba, March 10 (acn) The Cuban ambassador in Geneva, Juan Antonio Fernandez, said international cooperation is a must, to be able to deal with the economic crises and the other scourges hitting the world today.

Juan Antonio Fernandez, Cuban Ambassador in Geneva, expressed the Caribbean nation’s position on that issue at an interactive debate held with the Specials Rapporteurs on the Right to Food and Adecuate Housing, and with the expert on the Right to Water, reported Prensa Latina news agency.

The Cuban ambassador pointed out that collaboration was indispensable for the survival of the human kind itself, in order to face the economic, financial, environmental, social and food crises that have aggravated poverty and have brought millions of people to marginalization, reported
Prensa Latina news agency.

He said that the issue of the right to food was of the utmost importance: "My delegation joins your call to empower international cooperation in support of the fight against hunger," he said.

He agreed with a proposal made by one of the Relators who suggest rethinking the agreement on food aid.

Fernandez noted that the growing gap between the South and the North hampers the effective exercise of the right to food in developing countries, in particular in the most vulnerable sectors.

The Cuban ambassador added that the need to overcome hunger and malnutrition should be what determines the amount of aid, which should not be conditioned by commercial criteria or political interests.
