Cypriot President Meets Cuban Workers Official

HAVANA, Cuba, March 10 (acn) Cyprus' President Demetris Christofias met with the General Secretary of the Cuban Workers Federation Salvador Valdes Mesa, who is in that country for a world conference.

The Cuban official is attending a meeting of the Presidential Council of the World Union Federation taking place in that Mediterranean island, reported Granma newspaper on its website.

During the meeting, Christofias ratified Cyprus' support for the Cuban people's fight for its independence and sovereignty, especially in facing the blockade of the U.S.

Likewise, he told Valdes Mesa about the actions of his government to achieve the territorial unification of Cyprus and the constitution of a Federal State that would be made up by the Greek-Cypriot and the Turkish-Cypriot communities.

Valdes Mesa, also vice president of the international organization, talked about the current situation of the Cuban economy and the participation of Cuban workers in the economic and social development of the country. He appreciated Cyprus' offering to help after the passing
of three hurricanes last year.

Both leaders agreed that bilateral relations between their countries have very positive prospects with the opening soon of the Cyprus embassy in Havana.
