persons who recovered their hearing, in Cuba.

Doctor Antonio Paz, a pioneer of the scientific project on the island, told the Cuban News Agency that the cochlear implant treatment is being applied free of charge on patients who can assimilate the technique, which consists on the preparation of the internal ear to receive sound
signals from a language processor.

The treated patients include 22 deaf and blind persons, whose rehabilitation turns more complex, though they experienced significant benefits. Some 200 deaf persons and 30 deaf and blind patients are expected to be treated this year, said the expert.

The use of the technological advancement, which constitutes a prosthesis itself, does not definitively cure deafness, but it significantly improves the quality of life of the people and their participation in social life.
