SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Dec 7 (acn) Cuban President Raul Castro said that Antonio Maceo´s experience has been the source of Cubans´ resistance and defense of their Revolution.
Neither the pressures of the US blockade nor hurricanes will ever defeat us or divide us, said Raul Castro while explaining Caribbean leaders about the historic significance of the Cuban Independence Hero Antonio Maceo, on the occasion of the 112 anniversary of his death in combat.
The Caribbean leaders, who are in Santiago for the 3rd Cuba-CARICOM Summit paid tribute to the Cuban Independence Hero at the square named after him by laying a wreath on his honor.
During a tour of the museum at the square, the Cuban President explained about the life and work of Antonio Maceo, who was killed at 51 after a long struggle against Spanish colonial rule.
We have learned from the experience of Antonio Maceo, and it has helped us to resist during half a century; we are prepared to resist another half a century, said Raul and pointed out that over 70 percent of today’s Cuban population was born under US pressures; however, neither those pressures of the US blockade nor hurricanes will ever divide or defeat us, he stressed.
Raul Castro also accompanied the CARICOM leaders to pay homage to Cuba´s National Hero Jose Marti, at the mausoleum that treasures his remains at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery.

Cuban Youths Pay Tribute to Independence Hero Antonio Maceo
HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 7 (acn) Young cadets and officers with the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, University students and people in general paid tribute today to Cuban Independence Hero Antonio Maceo on the occasion of the 112th anniversary of his death in combat.
The pilgrimage kicked off at the Havana locality of San Pedro, where Antonio Maceo was killed in action and ended at the Cacahual site, where the remains of the major general and his aide Panchito Gomez Toro currently rest.
Once at the site, the crowd of Cubans paying honors to the Independence heroes also marked the 19th anniversary of the Tribute Operation, an action that brought home the remains of the Cubans killed in action in other countries, particularly in Africa.
During the ceremony, Major Luz Aliocha Ochoa, Chief of the Young Communist League at the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, pointed out that those Cubans, who were killed while fighting for the independence of other nations, gave their lives inspired by the examples of Antonio Maceo and Panchito Gomez Toro.
Major Aliocha Ochoa stressed that for the Cuban youth, today’s main combat trenches are their support of the country’s recovery, food production, reforestation and their preparedness for the defense of the nation.
The Cuban youths will be alongside their heroes and martyrs in today’s the ideological struggle, as the Cuban Five have been doing since they were incarcerated, she said in direct reference to the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters held in US jails since 1998 for having fought terrorism against Cuba.
