Raul Castro: Antonio Maceo, Example for Cuba’s Resistance

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Dec 7 (acn) Cuban President Raul Castro said that Antonio Maceo´s experience has been the source of Cubans´ resistance and defense of their Revolution.

Neither the pressures of the US blockade nor hurricanes will ever defeat us or divide us, said Raul Castro while explaining Caribbean leaders about the historic significance of the Cuban Independence Hero Antonio Maceo, on the occasion of the 112 anniversary of his death in combat.

The Caribbean leaders, who are in Santiago for the 3rd Cuba-CARICOM Summit paid tribute to the Cuban Independence Hero at the square named after him by laying a wreath on his honor.

During a tour of the museum at the square, the Cuban President explained about the life and work of Antonio Maceo, who was killed at 51 after a long struggle against Spanish colonial rule.

We have learned from the experience of Antonio Maceo, and it has helped us to resist during half a century; we are prepared to resist another half a century, said Raul and pointed out that over 70 percent of today’s Cuban population was born under US pressures; however, neither those pressures of the US blockade nor hurricanes will ever divide or defeat us, he stressed.

Raul Castro also accompanied the CARICOM leaders to pay homage to Cuba´s National Hero Jose Marti, at the mausoleum that treasures his remains at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery.
