Mexico-Cuba Inter-parliamentary Meeting Opens in Mexico

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 9 (acn) The 10th Mexico-Cuba Inter-parliamentary meeting was inaugurated on Monday at the Mexican Chamber of Deputies in Mexico City with a commitment to strengthen cooperation.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, Mexican legislator Victor Hugo Olivares, head of the Mexico-Cuba Friendship Group, said the meeting takes place in the context of total normalization of bilateral relations and at the threshold of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

For his part, Ricardo Alarcon, president of the Cuban Parliament, thanked Mexicans for their support and the Congress for its effort to obtain freedom for the Cuban Five, unjustly imprisoned in the United States.

Meanwhile, Cesar Duarte, chairman of the Chamber of Deputies directive board, noted that the meeting will consider pending matters and face the new challenges presented by the adverse international situation.

“Together we can help to reactive the bilateral mechanisms in areas such as the fight against drug trafficking, commerce, industry, agriculture and fishing, foreign trade, tourism, health, energy, biotechnology, oil, education and scientific-technological investigation,” said Duarte.

The Mexican legislator noted that Cuba and Mexico share common histories and a longstanding cultural identity. He said that now it is important to bring continuity to those ties.
