Mexico Hosts Festival of Cuban Culture

HAVANA, Cuba, March 16 (acn) Exhibitions, film screenings, dances and lectures are part of the 6th Festival of Cuban Culture that begins today in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, and runs until next Sunday, March 2nd.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, the event is taking place in the municipality of San Miguel de Allende, a World Heritage Site, and is dedicated to late Cuban singer and composer Ibrahim Ferrer.

The Director General of the festival, Guadalupe Meza, said that the event will also have traditional music, craftwork and literature, with the presentation of nearly 250 titles of music produced and recorded in Cuba.

The literature includes titles dedicated to children as well as Cuban classics in the categories of short story, novel and poetry.

San Miguel de Allende and the municipality of Old Havana, both declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, signed a twinning agreement in May 2000. Ever since, they have maintained cooperation ties in the areas of education, culture, sports and heritage conservation.

Cuban VP Meets Baseball Players in Mexico City

HAVANA, Cuba, March 12 (acn) Cuban VP of the Council of Ministers, Jose Ramon Fernandez met the Cuban representatives that are taking part in the 2009 World Baseball Classic there on Wednesday in Mexico City.

During the meeting, Fernandez spoke about the development of the competition and the performance of the Caribbean squad and learned about the experiences and opinions of the players, manager and trainers and coaches of the team.

According to Granma news daily, Fernandez told the squad about the happiness and satisfaction of the Cuban people and their admiration for their players. He also praised the team's discipline and patriotism, on and off the field.

Also there was the Cuban Ambassador in Mexico, Manuel Aguilera, who thanked the sports authorities of Puebla, where the Cuban squad concluded their preparation for the tournament.

The Cuban VP said he was confident that the Cuban team would put up an excellent performance during the event.

Cuba and Mexico Sign Health Cooperation Agreement

A cooperation agreement to boost the exchange of scientific knowledge was signed today in this city between the Mexican University of Veracruz and the Cuban International Neurological Restoration Center (CIREN).

Doctor Ramon Flores, representing the Mexican higher education center, said that the signing of the document will allow implementing highly beneficial projects in the health field, and he pointed out that one of the first projects to be implemented is the exchange of researchers,
professors and students.

Flores highlighted the well-known quality of CIREN, and its leading role in research studies.

Meanwhile, Doctor Julian Alvarez, president of the Cuban entity and signatory of the agreement on the Cuban side, recalled the historical relations between Cuba and Mexico, and declared himself in favor of strengthening cooperation bonds, especially in the area of medical-
scientific programs.

During a visit of the Cuban center, Flores talked to researchers and specialists about the rehabilitation programs for children and adults, and exchanged with some patients, like Mexican Miriam Casas, who was grateful to Cuban doctors for their love and dedication.


CIREN was founded on February 26th 1989, and its programs have benefited over 40,000 patients from 85 countries.

Mexico-Cuba Inter-parliamentary Meeting Opens in Mexico

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 9 (acn) The 10th Mexico-Cuba Inter-parliamentary meeting was inaugurated on Monday at the Mexican Chamber of Deputies in Mexico City with a commitment to strengthen cooperation.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, Mexican legislator Victor Hugo Olivares, head of the Mexico-Cuba Friendship Group, said the meeting takes place in the context of total normalization of bilateral relations and at the threshold of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

For his part, Ricardo Alarcon, president of the Cuban Parliament, thanked Mexicans for their support and the Congress for its effort to obtain freedom for the Cuban Five, unjustly imprisoned in the United States.

Meanwhile, Cesar Duarte, chairman of the Chamber of Deputies directive board, noted that the meeting will consider pending matters and face the new challenges presented by the adverse international situation.

“Together we can help to reactive the bilateral mechanisms in areas such as the fight against drug trafficking, commerce, industry, agriculture and fishing, foreign trade, tourism, health, energy, biotechnology, oil, education and scientific-technological investigation,” said Duarte.

The Mexican legislator noted that Cuba and Mexico share common histories and a longstanding cultural identity. He said that now it is important to bring continuity to those ties.
