First labor neighborhood of Camagüey of the Revolution

When January 26,1959 was created the National Institute of Saving and Housings (INAV) designating as regular to Pastorita Núñez, and was approved the Law soon after 135 that established the discount of rents, two of the measures of more popular reach edited by the Revolution, the political situation of the country was complex.

The renouncement of the Government first minister, Dr. José Miró Cardona and the “passive” resistance of the president of the Republic, Dr. Manuel Urrutia, made the Commandant to enter in functions in Boss Fidel Castro who, without lukewarm cloths, in meeting with the Council of Secretaries, outlined the necessity to confiscate the misappropriated goods and to give the earth to the help of the Law of Agrarian Reformation, that that until then had been braked in some form for “leaders” of different shades.

In this respect, the Dr. Antonio Núñez Jiménez wrote that “... the government was also integrated by elements that the town called retranc, and even contrarrevolutionaries, even minister like those of Agriculture, State, Public Works, Work, Treasury and the presidency of the National Bank of Cuba.”

That opportunity was taken advantage of in Camagüey by the leaning sedition movement for Hubert Matos, old major of the Column 9 and boss of the military forces in the county since January 12, in a campaign that induced officials and military to stimulate disorders and indisciplines in order to originate a public rising of protests to destabilize the interior security of the State.

THE FIRST STONE AMONG MANEUVERS

With that scene Pastorita Núñez traveled to Camagüey to place the first stone of the housings that would be built in lands located in the kilometer five of the highway to the airport and to foment, she said, the first labor neighborhood built by the Revolution in Cuba.

However, local officials of the own INAV, added to the hubermatist campaign, began soon, to create dissatisfaction in the population, when placing in interdict the honesty of members of the address of the organism and to propagate that those housings would belong to those “pure revolutionaries”, at the same time that they placed trips to the development of the works.

Increased the situation, 31 in the own month, the regular of the INAV returned to the county to deprive personally then to the delegated here, Ana Rosa Sifontes, and to a group of officials who had already assigned several houses with marked preference.

“In view of rumors and doubts that I have listened when arriving to this city on the form of award of the housings that the INAV builds, I ratify once again that will be given to all the sectors without favoritisms”, Pastorita told to the press that same night.

US THE GOOD AND YOU THE BAD

The hubermatist movementwon't give so easy the busy space; in spite of the discharge of the functioner, Hubert Matos and Joaquín Agramonte, provincial coordinator of the M-26-7, in prepotent and frank provocation, were devoted to present in numerous public acts as “sacrificed revolutionary leader.”

For those days, and in interview for the Channel 11 of Television, Agramonte declared that the position of the organizations in Camagüey was the one of supporting the Sifontes “as revolutionary that was prop in the first moments of the liberal fight and in the constant work of our county in the Revolution, although the M-26-7 has never ignored the Pastorita Núñez`s merits like directress of the INAV.”

In a provincial assembly summoned by the leadership of the M-26-7 in the Institute of Second Teaching with the municipal addresses, leaders labor and high officials of the army, occupied place in the presidency the former delegate of the INAV, presented then as leader of the Feminine Section of the M-26-7. In that meeting, Hubert Matos said, highlighting her paper “redeemer” and referring to the last events in Camagüey: “The important thing is not what is said in the declarations, but what there are behind them… us the good ones won't divide.”

FINDING THE ROAD

With the purpose of facing the contrarrevolutionary offensive, September 26, 1959 even before inaugurating in an official way the “allotment of Pastorita” or simply “the INAV”, like in a beginning was denominated to the current neighbourhood Lenin, Pastorita gave a first group of concluded works. In that occasion she said: “Finally we find the road and the things point to its place. The Revolution has strengthened and the works of the INAV, finally, are in hands of the town….”

Less than one month later, that same town adjusted , the bills to the hubermatism.(Eduardo Labrada Rodríguez)
