Cuban VP Meets Baseball Players in Mexico City

HAVANA, Cuba, March 12 (acn) Cuban VP of the Council of Ministers, Jose Ramon Fernandez met the Cuban representatives that are taking part in the 2009 World Baseball Classic there on Wednesday in Mexico City.

During the meeting, Fernandez spoke about the development of the competition and the performance of the Caribbean squad and learned about the experiences and opinions of the players, manager and trainers and coaches of the team.

According to Granma news daily, Fernandez told the squad about the happiness and satisfaction of the Cuban people and their admiration for their players. He also praised the team's discipline and patriotism, on and off the field.

Also there was the Cuban Ambassador in Mexico, Manuel Aguilera, who thanked the sports authorities of Puebla, where the Cuban squad concluded their preparation for the tournament.

The Cuban VP said he was confident that the Cuban team would put up an excellent performance during the event.

Cuban Baseball Team Continues Training in Mexico

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 23 (acn) The Cuban national baseball team held its second training session in this high-altitude city on Sunday on a cloudy and cold day in Puebla, reported Prensa Latina.

After arriving in Puebla on Saturday to train for the 2nd World Baseball Classic (WBC) (March 5-23) the Cubans checked out the Hermanos Serdan Stadium and held a warm-up session and light batting practice.

Several coaches said that the facility has good conditions to train for the Classic. On Sunday, the pitchers were also scheduled to take part in the training.

Regarding the presence of the Cuban team in this stage of their preparation, Mexican manager Vinicio Castilla said that Cuba is definitely the team to beat in the group that also includes Australia, South Africa and Mexico.

“The Cubans are hard-to-beat rivals and we can’t be overconfident. Hopefully, we’ll make it to the next round, which is our goal, but it depends on us to make it to San Diego, to face the top two teams of Group A to play in Tokyo.”

Cuban Grand Master (GM) Leinier Dominguez tied on Sunday with Azerbaijan’s Teimour Radjabov and remained undefeated with seven draws and a win in the strong Corus chess
tournament that is taking place in the Dutch city of Wijk aan Zee.

Leinier, the best Latin American chess player with an ELO rating of 2717 points, played with the black pieces and tied with Radjabov (2761) in only 14 moves of an English Opening.
